NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a central sector scheme of the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, launched in 1969. It provides students with an opportunity to participate in community service activities and programs. The primary objective of NSS is to develop students’ personalities and character through voluntary community service, guided by the principle of ‘Education through Service.’ The motto of the National Service Scheme (NSS), which focuses on personality development through community service, is “Not Me But You.” The NSS unit of Model Degree College, Nuapada, started on January 18, 2023. Currently, the NSS unit of this college has 100 volunteers who are committed to promoting community service, leadership, and social responsibility among students. Under the guidance of Principal Dr. Akshaya Kumar Sahoo and Program Officer Mr. Surendra Kalet, Assistant Professor of Sociology, the unit actively participates in various outreach programs that address social, environmental, and health-related concerns. The key initiatives include plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and plastic-free campus programs, all of which contribute to environmental sustainability. In addition to environmental initiatives, the NSS Co-Unit undertakes health and hygiene campaigns, including blood donation camps and menstrual hygiene awareness programs for female students. These efforts enhance public health awareness and promote community well-being. Furthermore, the unit conducts social awareness programs focusing on gender equality, women’s empowerment, drug abuse prevention, anti-ragging initiatives, and road safety awareness. These programs foster inclusivity, encourage ethical behaviour, and help create a safer campus and community environment. Through active participation in these initiatives, NSS volunteers develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while cultivating a strong sense of civic responsibility. The NSS Co-Unit unit plays a crucial role in promoting active citizenship among students, fostering a commitment to national development and social welfare. By instilling a spirit of volunteerism and civic responsibility, the NSS program ensures that students not only receive an education but also become socially conscious individuals dedicated to the betterment of society. Various programmes conducted by our NSS team is listed below.

YOUTH RED CROSS UNIT

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) is a program of the Indian Red Cross Society that aims to develop young people into leaders and advocates for vulnerable people. YRC initiatives assist the Indian Red Cross Society in putting the Movement’s core values into practice. It fosters a sense of service among the pupils as well as health, cleanliness, and hygiene. By encouraging their leadership and character traits, YRC programs contribute to the development of the leaders of tomorrow. The YRC organises blood donation drives, provides assistance to individuals with physical disabilities, and hosts talent shows for students in orphanages and those with visual impairments. YRC initiatives enable young people to contribute much-needed skills and ideas. Additionally, it encourages independence, the value of hard work, and improved interpersonal interactions. Model Degree College Nuapada is one of the very active YRC unit in Odisha. Our college’s students take part in numerous programs and engage in a variety of activities to aid those in need. In order to raise awareness and demonstrate support for those living with HIV/AIDS, the YRC unit at our college organises numerous events, such as marches and rallies on World AIDS Day, to encourage people to take action to stop the spread of HIV. Additionally, they conducted seminars, workshops, and educational programs to increase public knowledge of HIV/AIDS, prevention, and treatment by highlighting the objective of lowering the number of new HIV infections, AIDS-related fatalities, and stigma to zero.
